School is insane, but good.

I have a job working as an illustrator which is both good and educational.

My social life is as it has almost always been: nearly non-existent.

But I can handle that.

Once again I find myself trying to adjust to new experiences that I know are good for me and that I know I will love... once I get past the whole "new" aspect of them, haha.

I hate not knowing everything in the first phases of those types of scenarios, and I also hate change. But if I give it time I know that I will be greatly benefited.

Let's get serious. If you've ever seen the cartoon show, Avatar the Last Airbender, then you know how great it is. I've been called a nerd plenty a time for watching and enjoying that show. But the fact is is that it's one of the greatest cartoons ever created. It has a captivating plot, likable and relatable characters, the perfect mix of humor and seriousness. So you can imagine how excited and nervous I was for the live action movie the was being created by M. Night Shyamalan.

Well, finally July 1st rolled around and I bought tickets to the midnight showing, of course. And... well I don't know what to say. Throughout the movie I was looking for the meat of the story. Maybe that's aren't the right words. The whole movie seemed to go on and on like a long introduction to something bigger and better. It just seemed too fast, jumping from here to there, cutting in and out of scenes and dialogue in the strangest ways. There was very little humor and very little rest. I wanted something to focus on and the movie never gave it. It grew very close at the end, but even then they didn't quite manage to grasp it. The movie was over before the audience felt like they had followed an actual plot.

I was rather heart broken and my first thought was, "Oh no. The fans are going to tear this apart."

And they did. They hated it. And I don't blame them (them? I suppose I am one of them). It's hard to love something so much and see someone else's interpretation of it be completely different than yours. However, through out the movie I was thinking, "This is beautiful. This is really gorgeous. Why don't I like it?" I believe it was because of the attachment I had formed with the T.V. show. Unfortunately, if you were to go see the movie with out any former knowledge of the show you would be completely lost. I think the writers depended too much on what the fans would know and failed to introduce and establish key points in the plots correctly that would've made the movie enjoyable to both fans and non-fans. Instead of focusing on the characters and allowing them to fully develop, the creators chose to focus primarily on the four elements (water, fire, earth, and air) that the people of the Avatar world bend or are able to manipulate. This really hurt the movie and gave it a rather distant, almost documentary like feeling.

However, despite these flaw Shyamalan managed to create a really visually beautiful film. The special effects were phenomenal, the cinematography relatively stunning, and the accurate settings created a realistic view into the world the cartoon originally created. And the cultural diversity present in the film was absolutely brilliant. I really do think that Shyamalan loves the story of Avatar. You would have to if you wanted to create a movie about it. I think the problem that we find here is that Shyamalan's style of filming is very different from that of the original cartoon. When put together it simply didn't turn out as we fans expected.

Judging by the fans' reaction after the movie was over I think most of them were ready to hunt M. Night Shyamalan down and do unpleasant things to him. That's not right. In fact it makes me more angry than the movie itself. M. Night Shyamalan interpretation of Avatar is different. But just because you may not agree with it does not mean it isn't beautiful. He is an artist, and a great one at that, when he does something he stays true to himself and his style of filming. The Last Airbender is no different. I fiercely hope that despite the fan's disappointment in the movie M. Night Shyamalan will be able to create the next two movies in the series as he hoped to do.

Oh and let's not forget the Bridge to Terabithia incident.

This week I've been watching a show that my friend recommended to me.

It has a very cute, light hearted plot.

But who knew I would become so attached to it?

Well, the writers did, that's who.

Right when I least expected it they killed my favorite character.

Cue water works.

And when I mean water works I don't mean some tears here and there I mean full on sobbing.

It was heartbreaking.

Here's a conversations my family is sure to bring back up:

Me: *barely stops sobbing*

Mom: ... are you crying?

Me: No! *bursts into tears* They killed off my favorite character!

Mom: *chuckles and hands me a tissue* I'm sure he's in a better place.

Me: No he's not because he was a robot!

Mom: *bursts out laughing*

Me: *sobs*

The music is heavenly, the cinematography breathtaking, the acting brilliant!

Really, see it if you haven't.

So I'm very much in a Pocahontas mood.

And I'm loathing the fact that I cut my hair so it looks more like a man haircut instead of Pocahontas' lovely long locks :(

This painting was inspired by the movie.

The quality is rather horrible, but oh well.

Also, I would like to say that I was nearly done with this painting when photoshop quit on me, making it so I lost a lot of info.

My dear little border collie, Codak,

has recently developed a phobia of being outside.

He refuses to leave the house unless you literarily drag him out the door.

He also sleeps inside in his kennel, next to the back door at night.

Last night I slept on the couch, near the back door.

Around 2:00 a.m. my darlingest puppy kept whining and barking.

There is something you should know about me.

I. Hate. Being. Woken. Up. Mid-sleep.

Like cleaning, it makes me really aggressive.

Codak learned this this morning...

when I made death threats to him because he was being so noisy.

Please don't ever try to talk to me that early in the morning.

We probably won't end up being friends anymore because I have ZERO control over my mouth at that ridiculous time.

My freshman year at BYU is officially over.

I've checked out of my dorm, all my stuff is waiting to be unpacked at my family's home.

I won't go into lengths about all that this year has taught me.

However, I will say that I am surprised at how much I have learned art wise just from being one year in the art program.

I am SO excited to learn more!

However, I could do with out all of the other university credits.

Saturday I was able to have my pictures taken by this lovely lady!

She recently got accepted to the USU art department!!!

As she was my first private art student (hah! I'm hardly a teacher!) this was extremely exciting for me to find out!

This shoot was ridiculously fun! I'm not usually the one behind the camera (unless I'm taking pictures of myself) so it was a little strange at first.

But she let me help decide where we should take the pictures, how to pose for them, and was very open to weird ideas that I had.

Does this ever happen to you?

When you tell yourself "That's never going to happen. It's never happened before and it never will" and then it happens?

Once I told myself that about getting stitches.

Two days later I ended up in the hospital getting four stitches on my elbow (for falling off of a four wheeler... on the fourth of July...haha).

The same thing happened again today.

This semester I skipped the exact number of classes I was allowed to before it would hurt my grades.

"Save those day for when you actually get sick!" my mother had wisely advised.

Psh. Sick? Please. I never get sick. Even when I want to, I don't.

Yesterday, in my head, I was gloating over the fact that I hadn't gotten sick this entire school year.

Cue illness.

Chrissy: Festival of Colors.

Colored Powder+Hindu festival to welcome in Spring=Festival of Colors.

Colors+Cultural Event= I'm there.

Powders of the pink, orange, yellow, purple, blue and green type+a thousand people being crushed together = strange bonding moments between you and strangers when suddenly you're engulfed in a thick cloud of chalky colors.

Random guy who keeps smearing powdered chalk across your forehead while yelling, "Simba!"= only slight awkwardness.

Festival of Colors+ Chrisanne+ Panda Express afterwards= a day of epic proportions

As you can see I got a mouthful of orange powder.

But nary you mind, it's edible.

The only troubling thing was that I got a little artistically OCD.

I wanted to yell at people, "Hey you! With the purple powder! Can you thrown some right here? Yes there, thanks! And you with the pink! I need you to hit me right here. That'll make a lovely composition. And you with the yellow, can you-- No! Wait! I didn't tell you where to put it! Now you've messed up my lovely green!"

However, as you can see, I managed as best I could to keep my colors separate. I did NOT turn a nasty pinkish brown color that most of the other participants sported.

That was a relief.

Chrissy: Hard Times

Wednesday night I had the opportunity to go to the opening of a new show at the Springville Art Museum.

It's called Hard Times: An Artist's View.

It featured several artists' commentary on hard times.

To set the tone there was a man playing his banjo and harmonica for all to hear. In front of him his banjo case lay open waiting for needed tips.

There was also a soup line that put me in mind of something from a homeless shelter (not that it looked or tasted like it) .

Warren Chang's piece of these workers particularly captured my attention.

I love the man on the left and how he gazes out at the viewer.

Justin Taylor's art work was beautiful.

Simply breathtaking.

Overall it was a great show.

It is up to the 25th of April and if you have the opportunity to see it I would definitely recommend that you do so.

Chrissy: I enjoy community politics

With a debate club champion for a mother and a professor of constitutional law as a father how could I not?

Last night I went to my first Caucus.

I couldn't remember if I was a registered Republican or not.

I marked that I was, seeing as I was with the Young Republicans my senior year of high school.

I was the second to youngest one there and was disappointed that more of my neighbors didn't show.

However, we had more people show up to our precinct's caucus than any of the others in the building combined.

I like to vote.

And I like listening to people explain their views and then being able to pick who I want to be represented by.

I'm still a baby in the political world, but I think I've got a great start.

My birthday was great!

For the first time ever it extended over a period of three days!

Friday consisted of a makeover, complete with new makeup (:D), new clothes, and a new haircut. That's right! I finally cut it short!

It also involved Sushi!

And Soy Sauce paintings!

And then one of my favorite movies!

Saturday was my actual birthday.

That day consisted of presents and an In-N-Out Burger dinner.

Usually we get to pick what we want for our birthday dinners and then my mom makes it.

But everyone was too tired to make anything complex after the BYU game.

So I got fast food instead.

I've been craving a lot of meat lately.

Finally, on Sunday I had my legit birthday dinner.

It was a lovely weekend!

Today was and hopefully will continue to be a very productive day!

1. I did ALL of my laundry. $4.00 worth, to be exact. Then I realized that there is not enough room in my dresser for all my clothes to be clean at the same time. Sad day.

2.I finished my graduation plan! Yes, the one that was supposed to be done and signed by the people in the art department and on my multi-cultural counselor's desk last Thursday...

Guess what! I have to take 16 credits of Spanish before it can actually count towards a requirement. I better be amazing at that language after all those classes that are hogging my schedule up! So yes. The rest of my college career is officially mapped out. Heaven forfend it change!

3.I drew 5 hands for my hand project! Which one is your favorite?

4. I studied for a test.

5. I went to the creamery and the register rung up $6.66. Oh no! But then the cashier assured me that because I had a student card I didn't have to pay tax. Thank goodness for student cards.

Chrissy: The Gateway

Ah, if only I had some logical reason for creating this piece. It wasn’t an assignment; in fact it took a lot of time away from actual homework. When I began formulating ideas in my head for this piece it was in no way suppose to be this detailed or realistic. I was thinking of a fun little painting that I could make into one of my ridiculous book covers for a facebook profile picture. Then the train-wreck of my charcoal head study happened.

This past semester I’ve been taking figure drawing. It is the hardest class I have ever taken. Three hours of sitting on a bench and drawing a model is very physically exhausting. Three hours of comparing my work to everyone else’s in the class in mentally draining. After three hours I leave the class not only with sore shoulders and hands, but also with my artist’s ego ground to dust. The charcoal head study was the epitome of that class. It was probably better than it would’ve been at the beginning of the semester, but my skills had not progressed as I would’ve liked them to have. I asked myself “why?”. I came up with the following reasons 1. The charcoal head study was a rushed drawing that was meant to prove to myself I could actually do something 2. Neither the head study or my figure drawing class was allowing me to do what I loved to do with art: storytelling. And although they were helping gain the techniques and skills that would aid me in telling my stories better that class in itself left me feeling artistically unsatisfied. It was after these realizations that I set out to create a story, one that didn’t have a deadline. A story that wasn’t a rushed attempt to boost my self-esteem. I wanted to create something that I had thought over, poured my best efforts into, and that would teach me something new. This came by way of “The Gateway”.

Most of you will be thinking, “She’s carried this Narnia thing a little too far.” Let me begin by saying that yes, this began as a piece of me finding Narnia. However, as the hours I spent on this piece wore on I realized it really wasn’t Narnia or Hogwarts or Middle Earth or any of those magical places. It was the dream and hope that all of us secretly (or not so secretly in my case) carry around in our hearts. The dream that there is a place beyond finals or work. The hope that taxes and bills won’t always be a part of our existence. It is the wish to escape reality, just once, and not have to be responsible for the many responsibilities that are placed on our shoulders. It’s what I think about when my parent’s tell me “life only gets harder”.

I don’t think this piece could ever be received with as much enthusiasm as I have put into it. This is a little disappointing; I do love having people appreciate my pieces and telling me so. However, I’ve realized that one of the reasons I truly love to create art is not for the reason that my art may affect someone else but for the reason that it changes me. I benefit so much more from art than the art world does from me. This piece proved that to me. The reason I entitled it “The Gateway” was because it turned into a gateway for me. It became that place of solace that I needed; it had turned into my temporary escape from reality. As I painted I realized that while we can in no way completely break away from the lives we have made and continue to make for ourselves there are still little gateways of escape all around us. I found my gateway, and it helped me keep a slightly more level head when dealing with housing and homework amongst other college woes. I hope you are moved (even if it is just ever so slightly) by my little journey. However, if you were to take away one thing from this piece and my story I would hope that you would be compelled to find your own escape from reality, your own gateway.

They're obviously not very accurate, as my roommate pointed out.

But that's why it's called stylization!

I meant to blog about this earlier, but got a little caught up in life.

Finally had the chance to meet up with fellow blogger Cheri!

It was great!

We chatted for a while at the creamery.

She is super sweet and has a lot of funny stories!

We talked about facebook and blog stalking amongst other things.

We were both very glad to know that neither of us were 45 year old men!

I was out of sorts when I wrote it.

I had a fun time, really.

Obviously this one turned out more pessimistic than hoped for.

I should just shut my mouth sometimes.

Once, my family owned a turtle.

We cleverly named her turtle.

She liked to runaway a lot.

Obviously, it was a problem.

Unable to deal with her ridiculous mood swings

horribly hygiene habits

and constant ungratefulness

we sadly had to depart with our lovely turtle.

We gave her to a friend.

There she became know as: the Sherman Mobile.

We have every reason to believe she is very happy in her new home.

Once again, we have reason to rejoice for happy endings!

This semester I am taking a Strengthening Marriage and Family class.

It. Is. Amazing.

Seriously my favorite class.

So, any of you who attend BYU or are planning to attend BYU I would highly recommend taking this class.

It's SFL 100 with Professor Hill.

We primarily focus on The Family: A Proclamation to the World, and the doctrines it teaches.

You don't have to be married or engaged to take it.

Heck! You don't even have to be in a serious relationship (*cough me cough*)!

The only reason I took it was to get more credit hours.

But I'm learning things that will definitely be applicable in the future.

It is a greaaaaaat class!

Ha ha today we discussed "breaking up" (among other things).

And I drew this little picture.

Girl: You're breaking up w/ me?

Boy: Sorry. You're head it just too big.

And that is an example of a horrible way to break up.

After my date last night I was....

reaaaaaally tired.

The date was ok.

Nothing amazing, yet not horrible like others (bike rides, anyone? Country dancing?)

We:

~Discussed Greek Mythology (having strange philosophies about life that go against your religion and trying to force them upon innocent people is NOT attractive).

~Ate food (he was a slow eater).

~Walked in the snow. I hate snow.

~Went to the Bean Life Science Museum. I made him sit down and talk while I drew a rhino. That was enjoyable.

~He told me the plot of Psycho after I asked him to.

~We went to the Creamery and had ice cream while playing Mancala.

and then we ended with a hug and thank you.

And I was really tired.

So I took this picture for you.

It's my "I'm so tired that if you tell me about another one of your philosophies I will drop kick you to Tanzania" face.

Can success be defined by one moment?

My thoughts:

I don't think success is defined by just one moment. I believe it is a lot of little moments no one else sees that lead up to and build that great moment. Like with art. One day I hope to be able to create something that is simply breathtaking. I obviously haven't gotten there yet. But every art class, every painting (failed or not), every little success will lead up to and prepare me for that moment.

Walking across campus when everyone is getting out of classes

is ridiculous.

I can't wait for everyone to start skipping.

But what's worse is trying to get to your class on time

while walking behind a lovey dovey couple holding hands.

I mean, I already get unreasonably aggressive when I see PDA.

But on top of that they walk sooooo slow!

And I'm not a super fast walker myself (I have to jog to keep up with my roomies when they walk) but seriously people.

Speed it up!

Also.

You make me feel really really bitter when you kiss.

Just saying.

(we're actually trying to be monsters here, but I felt it was appropriately aggressive looking)

However, let the records also show that sitting across from a couple

who is have a little argument is by far the most interesting way to pass time between classes.

Her (imagine drop dead gorgeous, witchy type): It's not that I have anything against her.... (this is where I couldn't understand what they were saying).

Him (imagine the attractive, down to earth, mechanical engineer major type): I just think she needs some really good friends right now. She's going through a hard time.

Her: Like I said *getting all teary* it's nothing against her personally. I just feel like ....

Him: I'm not like that, Sabrina, you know that I'm a straight forward guy.

Her: ..... (imagine, I can't believe you'd choose her over me face).

Him: I'm sorry you feel that way, but there's nothing I can do.

Chrissy: the Princess and the Frog

I meant to blog about this right after I saw it.

Alas, I was busy until now.

So, Disney's The Princess and the Frog.

First, I unfortunately was not able to go with my family.

It would've been delightful to watch it with my younger siblings

especially my 7 year old sister.

Instead my art, and slightly more critical, friends took me.

I've been waiting since 11th grade for this movie,

when I heard a rumor about Disney creating a Black princess.

Hand drawn animation is THE BEST EVER!

The character design was simply brilliant as were the set designs.

This movie had so much color and flavor.

Tiana, the main character, is such a strong addition to the Disney Princess collection.

The Prince was funny and charming and the villain was dynamic and entertaining.

I think the only problem I had with the movie was that Tiana looked too much like Mulan.

It seems like almost every ethnic Disney princess is cut out of the same mold.

Still.

It was a beautiful film.

I want this book so badly!

If anyone wants to buy it for me for my birthday I'd be delighted!

Merry Christmas all!

I hope you've had a good one.

I wanted to share with you one Christmas tradition my family has had for a while.

Each year, two days before Christmas, my family always makes

Tamales.

Then, on Christmas Eve we deliver them to the families who asked for them.

On Christmas day we eat some ourselves for dinner.

The reason we do Tamales is because of what they can symbolize.

For my family we like to think of them as gifts.

Because you have to unwrap the corn husk before you can eat it.

This year I believe we made over 6 dozen tamales!

Lots of work.

But definitely worth it!

p.s. This is my new hair cut! Bangs (across the cut bangs, as I like to call them), layers, a trim, and some badly needed thinning out.

Also.

I cut my hair. I just don't have any good pictures of it to put up yet.

But it's not short! I just got some bangs and some layers.

Since I felt I had to include an explanation...

Why I hate it:

1. It's not my style.

2. I don't know what is good and what is not when it comes to abstract.

3. It hurts my head.

Why I like it:

1. It made me stretch my imagination.

2. Never have I used those colors together.

3. I found a way to still be me even with abstract art.

4. Spending time around the Paleontology Museum was really interesting!

Why I included it in my portfolio:

1. My teacher really liked it. Like REALLY liked it.

2. It's always good to show variety when putting together a portfolio.

3. Hopefully it will appeal to the reviewers who get that kind of thing.

This is my second self portrait.

While I loved the watercolor one for what it taught me

It just wasn't up to par for my final portfolio.

So I did this instead. It would be a lot better if I had more time to work on it.

Unfortunately, I don't. I hope the graders aren't too harsh with it.

I laugh too loud, I'm too shy around strangers, and I don't speak as eloquently as I would like.

But then I step back and see that I have a lot of positive attributes as well.

I can make people laugh, I can tell great stories, and I am just a super dramatic "cray-cray" girl who enjoys life!

These past few months have been great.

Really, they have been.

But they've also been hard.

I don't adjust well to change. It's not an easy thing for me.

Consequently learning how to live without the fam has been a struggle.

I tend to linger on the past, or look to the future.

And unfortunately I forget to appreciate the present.

This week has not been a very good one,

and I found myself wishing either to be back at home or to be done with college, married, and working.

It seemed as if my brain had hardwired itself to think the my happiness depended on things I couldn't control.

As I complained about this to my roommate she told me, "Chrisanne! Just go distract yourself. Go do something good."

So I started a self portrait.

I found it made me happy. And from my foul mood came something beautiful.

I thought of using it for my final project in my 2-D design class, but the background is too ridiculous to turn in.

But still. I feel like this painting of myself kind of taught me how to brew happiness.

I can make my own happiness by just doing what I love.

I don't have to let the way I feel be controlled by outside forces.

The discovery is rather liberating!

holds its annual Christmas Party.

This year Santa came.

I sat on his lap and he asked me what I wanted for Christmas.

I told him Jacob Black.

He told me I'd have to wait for a real New Moon before that would ever happen.

At BYU there is this ridiculous pressure to be in a relationship.

Although its not always spoken, it seems to weigh heavily in the atmosphere.

And sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by it.

But then my amazing roomies from Delaware tell me, "Girl, you are a strong independent black woman. And you do not need a man. WWOMJD. What would Opra Winfrey, Michelle Obama, and Jada Pinkett Smith do?"

And then I'm ok :)

As a joke I always carry a fake wedding ring I bought a long time ago from Claire's in my coat pocket. So that if some creeper guy, who also feels the pressure to get married, comes and hits on me I can slip it on and flash it in his direction.

Oh the cleverness of me!

I learn so many things at college.

Mom and Dad. Don't worry. You're money is not going to waste.

Some great lesson I learned today were:

1. It is relatively easy to fall asleep while sitting up. Especially during mythology. If you neck starts to kink just switch sides.

2. While using public bathrooms (which I try to do often because 6 girls in one apartment goes through at least one roll of toilet paper a day. And toilet paper is expensive people!!!!) I unconsciously almost always choose the 2nd stall closest to the door.

There are many who hate winter.

I actually like it.

I have a pretty high tolerance of cold (most of the time).

My only problem with winter is the fact that my dorm room is FREEZING when it snows.

And I don't like to be cold when I sleep.

Who does?

So, I know you all are thinking, "Oh my goodness! How does she stay warm at night?"

I'll show you.

Below you see me in my summer pajamas.

Then you see all the articles of clothing I put on before I go to bed during the winter.

A hat. A scarf. A jacket (over my shirt). Sweats. Long socks. And a water bottle full of hot water.

After this I climb into bed where I get under a fleece blanket, then a thick quilt, and finally my bead spread.

Sometimes this works.

Sometimes I'm still cold.

Such is life.
